Why does one outfit look powerful and another washed out, even though you like both colors? Often the difference is not in the colors themselves, but in the contrast: how much difference there is between the light and dark parts of your outfit. And how well that matches your personal contrast level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your face has its own contrast too. The better your outfit matches it, the more harmonious you look. Below we explain how that works and how to discover which contrast suits you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is contrast in clothing<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Contrast is the difference between light and dark. Black with white is a lot of contrast. Beige with light grey is little contrast. Navy with a light blue shirt sits in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In yourself, it is about the difference between your skin, your hair and your eyes. Someone with dark hair, light skin and bright eyes has high contrast. Someone with light blonde hair, light skin and light eyes has low contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your personal contrast level<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Low<\/b>Your hair, skin and eyes are close to each other in lightness. Everything blends softly together.<\/span><\/div>
Medium<\/b>There is a clear difference, but not an extreme one. For example mid-brown hair with light or medium skin.<\/span><\/div>
High<\/b>There is a lot of difference, for example dark hair and brows with light skin, or very light eyes with dark skin.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Do the black-and-white test<\/span>

Take a selfie in daylight without make-up and switch it to black and white. Without color, you see much better how light or dark your hair, skin and eyes are compared to each other. If everything looks like one shade of grey, you have low contrast. If your hair and eyes clearly stand out, you have high contrast.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you wear black and white while you have low contrast yourself, your outfit draws all the attention. Your face fades into the background and you can look harsher and sterner than you intend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too little contrast for you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you have high contrast yourself and only wear soft shades that are close to each other, you can look washed out and unremarkable. Your natural strength then does not come through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
